  • Cardstock
  • Glue stick
  • Tissue paper
  • Tacky glue
  • Rope
  • 3 Days
  • Sticky fingers

Day 1

  1. Blow up one balloon and use a sturdy bowl to stabilize it.
  2. Cut newspaper into strips 2.5cm x 6cm. (1 x 3in.).
  3. Mix milk with water until you get a sticky glue.
  4. Dip the newspaper into the glue to coat both sides, and wipe off the excess to make papermache strips.
  5. Cover the balloon with overlapping strips and alternating directions for strength.
  6. Allow to dry before adding another layer.
  7. Papermache a neck and head separately. They will be attached after they dry.

Day 2

  1. Prepare newspaper strips and glue with flour and water as before.
  2. Wrap string or twine around the body of the piñata twice. Find the center of gravity by holding the four ends of the two strings in your hand and allow the piñata to hang from the strings. Adjust the position of the strings so that the piñata hangs in the position you want.
  3. Tie the ends of all the strings together in one solid knot.
  4. Lock the position of the strings in place with strips of papermache.
  5. Attach the neck and head with papermache strips.
  6. Use a glue stick to make a tail fan of cardstock feathers and smaller fans for wings.
  7. Attach the feather fans with papermache strips.
  8. Allow the second layer to dry completely before the next steps.

Day 3

  1. Prepare tissue paper in 3 x 3in. squares.
  2. Cut a v-shaped opening on top of the bird that does not interfere with the support strings.
  3. Cover the tip of your finger with a square of tissue paper. Put a dot of tacky glue at the tip and sick it to the bird. Cover the bird with a layer of feathery puffs.
  4. Attach the second balloon to the neck as a bright wattle.
  5. Attach legs and feet.
  6. Or course, you could just paint it if you don’t want to mess with tissue paper feathers.

Party Day

  1. Fill the piñata with prizes, candy, toys, and school supplies.
  2. Slip a rope under the string knot and tie it on.

Pinata rules of the game

Children take turns hitting a piñata filled with candy with a stick. Each time the piñata loses a few prizes, all the children collect the candy and toys that fall out of it and gather them back to the leader for an equal distribution at the end.

  1. Line up the children from youngest to oldest so that even the smallest children can have their turn to hit the piñata before the older, stronger children open it. Players waiting for their turn should be at least 4 meters away from the piñata to avoid being hit by the stick.
  2. Recall the rules of the piñata game. When the piñata is opened, everyone counts to 10 out loud before rushing to get the candy. This allows the child with the stick to take off his or her blindfold and drop the stick on the floor so no one gets hurt.
  3. Hang the piñata by throwing the rope over a tree beam or branch, tying it to the trunk or a chair for a stationary piñata or holding the loose end in your hand for a dancing piñata.
  4. One after another, have the children step forward to hit the piñata with the stick. Traditionally, the player is blindfolded and then spun around 3 times before hitting the piñata three times. Consecutive turns only hit once.
  5. Younger children (under 4-5 years old) can skip the blindfold and just hit.
  6. For older children, during their turn, an adult can pull on the rope to move the piñata back and forth to make the pinata game a little more challenging.
  7. After the second round, if the piñata is not open, have the last (oldest) player take off their blindfold and give their best shot.
  8. When the piñata is finally opened and all of its contents are spilled on the floor, and the children have counted loudly to 10, then run to pick up the candy and little surprises; the last candy is collected and distributed to each child.
